UFCW 1518 is proud to welcome two new voices to its Executive Board — Helen Zhai and Jasmeet Kaur. Both long-standing members and passionate advocates, Helen and Jasmeet bring fresh perspectives, new energy, and a deep commitment to lifting up their fellow workers.
Helen Zhai: A Leader from PriceSmart
Helen Zhai’s journey with UFCW 1518 began 18 years ago when she started working at PriceSmart. Over nearly two decades, she has built a reputation as a dedicated and compassionate advocate for her coworkers. For the past 8 years, she has served as a shop steward while standing up for members, resolving conflicts, and ensuring the workplace is fair and respectful.
Now, Helen becomes the first recent Executive Board representative from PriceSmart, a major milestone not just for her workplace, but for the union as a whole.
As a first-generation Canadian, Helen understands the challenges many workers face when navigating new systems and unfamiliar environments. Her goal as an Executive Board member is simple and powerful: educate, empower, and advocate. She wants all workers, especially newcomers and essential workers, to understand the important role unions play in protecting their rights.
Jasmeet Kaur: A Voice for FreshCo and International Students
Jasmeet Kaur’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and commitment. Arriving in Canada as an international student, she quickly found work and joined UFCW 1518. Her passion for fairness and justice led her to become a shop steward, where she became a trusted ally for her coworkers.
Today, she makes history as the first Executive Board representative from FreshCo.
She’s especially committed to helping international students and new Canadians understand their workplace rights and the power of union membership. With her lived experience and dedication, Jasmeet is ready to serve and support members across the province.
Building a Stronger Union, Together
The additions of Helen and Jasmeet mark a new chapter for UFCW 1518, one that reflects the diversity, strength, and resilience of our membership. Their leadership represents a step forward, not only in expanding representation to more workplaces, but in deepening the union’s connection to the communities we serve.
Their stories are reminders that the fight for fairness begins with people who care, who show up, speak out, and stand together.
We’re excited to welcome Helen and Jasmeet to the Executive Board, and we look forward to the work they’ll do to build a better future for all members.
