We are seeking members to join the Social Action Committee – contact your union rep for information on joining.
The Social Action Committee will advocate for evidence-based social action and education rooted in the voices of members from equity-deserving communities. We recognize that unions are inherently political. They were created through a long history of political/labour struggle and are still part of a larger struggle for justice. In recognizing that history, we support UFCW 1518 to take action backed by research, education, communication, and partnerships.
The Social Action Committee will play an advisory role to the Executive Board of the union on social issues by making evidence-based recommendations. These recommendations may include an action plan that has communication and/or education components for general membership or the union. The Committee will work with other equity-related or social action committees/networks at the provincial and national level.
- Developing community through amplifying equity-deserving voices and providing opportunities to foster peer to peer relationships
- Building solidarity through relationship building and engagement with social justice and equity-deserving groups
- Supporting members from equity-deserving groups in deepening their involvement and leadership within the union
- Learning and education for ourselves and general membership around equity and social/political action
- Humility within the committee as we engage in educating membership and partner with other organizations, networks, and committees
