Workers at Mount Washington Ski Resort have officially joined UFCW 1518. This successful union certification marks an exciting step forward as the union expands into the outdoor ski and recreation sector.
As BC’s largest private sector union, UFCW 1518 represents thousands of workers across the province in a wide range of industries, including major retail workplaces such as Mountain Equipment Company.
This certification reflects a growing movement among outdoor recreation workers who are seeking a stronger voice on the job, better protections, and a fair say in their working conditions. Now as UFCW 1518 members, Mount Washington workers have the union’s support as they continue to fight for these benefits.
Many of the same challenges faced by retail workers such as seasonal schedules, safety concerns, customer service pressures, and the need for fair wages and benefits, are also central to the experience of Mount Washington Ski Resort workers. UFCW 1518’s strong presence in the retail space positions the union to support our newly certified workers in the ski industry.
“Mount Washington workers care about the community, mountain safety, and are passionate about the outdoors. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a say in things like scheduling, pay, and their safety,” said UFCW 1518 President Patrick Johnson. “Joining UFCW 1518 means these workers now have a way to speak up and make their workplace, and the ski industry, better.”
As UFCW 1518 continues to grow, organizing workers in new sectors is a key part of building stronger workplaces across the province. The addition of Mount Washington Ski Resort workers signals an important step in bringing union representation to more people working in BC’s outdoor recreation economy.
We look forward to supporting these workers as they begin the process of negotiating their first collective agreement and building a stronger future, that supports all workers – together.
