Kiaro Cannabis Workers Unite for Fairness

February 19, 2025

In an important move towards fairness and improved working conditions, the team at Kiaro Cannabis in Port Moody joined UFCW 1518 last year, becoming some of the latest members of the BC Budtenders Union. This growing trend of unionization among cannabis workers across the province is a testament to their commitment to each other and their collective fight for fairness.

Taking a Stand

At a time when workers are struggling to make ends meet due to the high cost of living, job security becomes critical, so these workers decided to take a stand by joining the BC Budtenders Union. Marissa recalled, “It all started when one of my co-workers approached me about unionizing. As a former UFCW 1518 Safeway member, I knew the union had been organizing cannabis workers across BC for some time. That’s why we chose to join UFCW 1518.”

Speaking about the support provided by the union, Marissa emphasized: “The union stood with us every step of the way. I can’t stress enough about the support we’ve received, especially for those unfamiliar with unions.”

“It’s an empowering feeling sitting across the table from your employer as an equal.”

Empowered and United

Now, empowered and united, the workers are at the bargaining table.  Gisella, who sits on the bargaining committee alongside Marissa, expressed, “I always felt like a small cog in the corporate world. But at the bargaining table, I am there to represent my colleagues. It’s an empowering feeling sitting across the table from your employer as an equal.” Among their priorities are fighting for wage improvements, job security, education benefits, and respect.

Community Support

The workers have also found encouragement from their regular customers. “Our customers are incredibly supportive when they learn about our unionizing efforts. Their encouragement makes us feel supported and inspired,” Gisella shared.

A Call to Action

Marissa concluded with a powerful message for other cannabis workers considering unionization: “Things can get better if you unionize and stand up for your rights. In the meantime, support your coworkers and be there for each other. Don’t hesitate to contact UFCW 1518 if you feel you’re being mistreated.”

Join the movement. Stand up for your rights. Together, we can create a fair workplace and better working conditions for all cannabis workers. 🌿✊
