Secretary-Treasurer Ronda Melbourne’s Statement on Healthcare Assistant Day

Today, on Healthcare Assistant Day, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our 3,800 dedicated members in the healthcare sector for their work in Community Home Support, Community, Health, Community Social Services, and other programs.

The BC healthcare system simply wouldn’t function without you. You provide compassionate care to our most vulnerable. Through thick and thin you make sure our loved ones receive the best care possible. Your hard work is invaluable and goes beyond just those you help. It deeply impacts their families. Knowing their loved ones are in good hands gives them peace of mind.

Last week I had the opportunity to join Jennifer Vecchio, a proud Community Health Worker at Nelson Home Support and UFCW 1518 Executive Board member, on the road. I experienced firsthand the types of important work that many of our members do in the community and the types of challenges you face every day.

From navigating harsh weather conditions, travelling long distances, and managing demanding schedules, you continue to persevere to deliver the essential care that our communities depend so much on despite how hard it may be.

Though we have made progress over the years, the healthcare landscape continues to evolve. There’s still work to be done. As we approach bargaining next year, the union will stand behind you. We will fight for fair compensation, improved scheduling and benefits and safer working conditions so you can continue to provide the exceptional care you do every day.

Thank you again for your hard work, and happy Healthcare Assistant Day!

In Solidarity,

Ronda Melbourne
Secretary-Treasurer
