Protect Your Hours: Understanding Vendor Stocking Rules at Safeway

April 1, 2025

When unauthorized vendors stock shelves at your Safeway stores, they’re not just breaking the rules—they’re taking hours directly from your schedule and your paycheck. This especially impacts members who aren’t receiving their full hours allocation. Every hour worked by an unauthorized vendor is an hour taken from a union member.

Know the Rules

Only these six approved vendors can stock products at Safeway:

  • Pop: Coca Cola and Pepsico
  • Chips: Old Dutch and Frito Lay
  • Bakery: Canada Bread and Portofino

Even these approved vendors must sign in and out when working in our stores.

Special Case

Carlton/Hallmark Cards representatives can only work during seasonal changeovers (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day) and must be working alongside a union member.

Action Required: Report violations

  1. Note the vendor company name
  2. Record the date and time
  3. Report to your union representative

Do not assume someone else will report it. Your report makes a difference.

The Cost of Not Reporting

  • Lost Hours = Lost Wages: Members not getting their full hours are directly impacted by unreported violations
  • Weaker Contract Enforcement: Every unreported violation weakens our collective agreement protections
  • Setting Dangerous Precedents: Ignoring violations today leads to more violations tomorrow

Solidarity in Action

  • Vendor violation fines go directly to the Member’s Emergency Fund, supporting fellow members in crisis
  • Every violation you report helps protect jobs and hours for everyone
  • These hard-won protections only work when we enforce them together

When you see a violation, don’t wait – report it immediately. What might seem like a small help during your busy shift directly threatens your future hours and job security.
