Kim Novak dedicated her entire career to the fight for dignity and respect for all workers; she shattered glass ceilings and made the labour movement a more welcoming place for all, regardless of their identity.
UFCW 1518 has announced the creation a Legacy Fund in her memory. Contributions to this fund will be committed to the advancement of causes Kim dedicated her life to.
The Kim Novak Legacy Fund will target support to the individuals, groups, and populations that Kim was the most passionate about.
The first priority for Kim of course were her children and family, but also how to support other young families and in particular women in union leadership who strive to balance home life and work life.
She saw the many disadvantages women experienced in workplaces and leadership and prioritized equity and gender justice. Kim was a voice for low-wage workers without the protection of a union and developed innovative approaches to union organizing.
Close to her heart were engagement and education opportunities for union members both groundbreaking and standard. She created opportunities, that helped grow the union movement, that were fair and easily accessible to members.
Work will begin in the Fall of 2024 to define the Legacy in co-operation with her family, UFCW 1518 leadership, and labour and community partners who have expressed a commitment to make the Legacy sustainable.
The goal this Fall is to bring together the Legacy governance, donors, possible recipients, family, and our union to ensure we can quickly and effectively action initiatives and support programs that Kim was passionate about!
Being an initial donor will help build the momentum we need to grow the Legacy Fund and provide you with an opportunity to help shape the Kim Novak Legacy Fund.
For example, some of our potential partners have already signaled a preference of what target area they would like some of their donation to be directed.
